Your industrial sewing machine is not just a tool, it is the driving force behind your business! No matter if you are using a high speed Juki or a heavy duty Speedway, these machines are designed for hard work, but they are not your run of the mill “set it and forget it” appliances.
The USA is filled with busy sewing shops, independent upholstery shops to huge mass production garment factories, and the only thing separating a machine from being able to run for 5 years vs 20 years is the amount of regular daily care you provide to it.
Performing preventive maintenance will not only help save you money from potential costly repairs, but will also keep your stitch quality at its best and keep your motor operating quietly too. By taking approximately 5 minutes before and after each workday, you can eliminate 90% of the most common mechanical failures you experience on a daily basis. Here is a list of your daily maintenance tasks to keep your sewing machines running like new for a longer period of time.
1. The "clean sweep": Fighting the lint enemy
Industrial machinery can be destroyed by Lint without you realising it. The high speed of the needle when sewing through fabric (5000 stitches a minute) makes microscopic particles of fiber and these will, when mixed with machine oil, form a thick "gunk". As gunk builds up (or more accurately thickens) it clogs the feed dogs on the machine or creates friction on the hook assembly which could ultimately prevent the machine from being able to continue functioning properly.
To keep your workspace professional and your machine fast, follow these steps every evening:
- Open the bobbin case: Use a soft brush or a small vacuum to remove lint from the hook area. Avoid using "canned air," as it often pushes lint deeper into the internal gears where it can do more damage.
- Clear the feed dogs: Dust often gets trapped between the teeth of the feed dogs. If left uncleaned, this buildup prevents the fabric from moving smoothly, leading to uneven stitch lengths.
- Wipe the tension discs: Run a clean piece of scrap fabric through the tension discs to ensure no stray threads or dust are interfering with your thread flow.

2. Lubrication: The lifeblood of high-speed sewing
Industrial machines operate at high temperatures and extreme friction. Without proper lubrication, metal components will literally grind each other down. Most modern industrial machines have an automatic oiling system with a reservoir (the "oil pan"), but that doesn't mean you can ignore it.
Every morning before you power up, perform a quick "oil check":
- Check the oil level: Look at the sight glass or the reservoir under the table. The oil should be clear (like light honey) and sit between the "High" and "Low" marks.
- Look for discoloration: If the oil looks dark, grey, or opaque, it is contaminated with metal shavings and lint. This is a sign you need a full oil change.
- Manual oiling points: Even with automatic systems, some "walking foot" or specialized machines have manual oiling holes marked in red. Add one drop of high-quality industrial mineral oil to these spots daily.
3. The "pre-flight" mechanical check
Before you start your first production run of the day, a 60-second mechanical audit can prevent a broken needle or a ruined garment. Listen to your machine; it will usually tell you if something is wrong before it actually breaks.
- Check the needle: Even if it hasn't broken, a needle can develop a microscopic "burr" or a slight bend after a long day of sewing heavy denim or leather. Starting the day with a fresh needle is the cheapest insurance policy you can buy.
- Test the tension: Sew a quick 6-inch scrap of the day’s fabric. Ensure the "lock" of the stitch is centered and not looping on the top or bottom.
- Secure the screws: Vibration is constant in industrial sewing. Briefly check that the needle set screw and the presser foot screw are tight. A loose foot falling off at high speed can cause catastrophic damage to the needle bar.
