Supra Sewing stocks eight JUKI machines built for upholstery and other heavy work. One feeds the material from two points of contact. The other seven feed from three, which is what lets them handle stacked leather and coated vinyl without the layers sliding. Past that you are choosing arm length, needle count, and bed shape.

How the feed works

Two points of contact, or three?

A top and bottom feed machine moves the work with the presser foot above and the feed dog below. Two points. On a single layer of canvas you would not notice anything missing, and the DU-1181N handles medium-weight goods on exactly that principle.

Unison feed adds the third point. The needle travels with the material while it is still down in the seam, so at the moment the layers would shift against each other, the needle is holding them. That is why stacked leather and multi-ply vinyl go on a unison machine, and why seven of these eight are built that way. What separates a DNU-1541 from an LU-1508?

Grade, and JUKI says so in the model code itself. On the LU-1508NS the S is JUKI's designation for heavy-weight work: a 135×17 needle running Nm125 to Nm180, thread from #30 to #5, and a 9 mm maximum stitch length. The LU-1508NH carries the H for extra heavy-weight, and takes a needle to Nm200, thread to #1, and a 10 mm stitch.

The NH also runs slower, 2,000 SPM against 2,500, and that is not a defect. Speed is what you trade for the longer stitch and the heavier thread. JUKI's own LU-1508N series page describes the mechanism both grades share: the ratio of alternate vertical movement stays constant as material thickness changes, so the presser foot does not start meeting thick work late. Late contact is where irregular stitches come from.

Below both of those sit the DNU-1541 and the DNU-1541S, on the same unison feed. The 1541 is the volume model, the one most shops settle on for leather goods, bags and upholstery. JUKI positions the 1541S at heavier applications: cargo handling belts, containers, car seats and sofas. If your seams are structural and the shift runs long, look there before stepping up to the LU-1508 family.

Do I need a long arm or two needles?

These are not upgrades of each other. They answer different questions, and a shop that buys the wrong one has spent thousands solving a problem it did not have.

Arm length is about the size of the piece. The LU-2810AS gives 347 mm of clearance, which is the difference between turning a boat cushion inside the machine and wrestling it against the head.

Needle count is about the seam. The LU-1560N lays two parallel rows in one pass, so the second line of topstitching is not sewn by eye. JUKI's LU-1560N series page covers the double-needle compound feed.

When do I need a cylinder bed?

When the work will not lie flat. The LS-1341 has a 72 mm cylinder that takes tubular work down to 40 mm across: boot shafts, bag gussets, armrests. A flat bed cannot hold those at all, which makes this the one machine in the range you cannot substitute for another. Every other machine here has a flat bed, so if any part of your work is tubular, this is where the decision starts rather than where it ends.

Common mistake

Assuming every "walking foot" machine is the same machine

The phrase covers both feed systems, and price makes the difference look like a discount. The DU-1181N is several hundred dollars below the DNU-1541 and both are sold as walking foot machines, so the cheaper one reads as the same thing on sale.

It is not. The DU-1181N feeds from two points and the DNU-1541 from three. On medium-weight goods that gap rarely shows. On four plies of leather it shows on the first seam, as the top layer creeping ahead of the bottom one. Match the feed to the worst material you sew, not the average.

What does "assembled" mean when the machine arrives?

For every machine on this page it means the head is mounted on its table, the servo motor is wired, and the machine has been run and timed before it was packed. Thirty seconds of that process:

It matters because an industrial head shipped loose is a half-day of setup before the first seam, and because timing that was correct in the factory is not always correct after freight. So which one?

Four questions get you there. What are you sewing? If it is medium-weight goods, the DU-1181N is enough; anything stacked or coated, start at the DNU-1541. How thick at the worst point? Past four or five plies of leather with bonded thread, the LU-1508NH earns the difference.

How big is the piece? If you are wrestling panels against the head, that is what the 347 mm arm is for. And what shape? Flat work goes on any of them, tubular work only on the LS-1341.
