Essential sewing equipment every tailor shop needs

Most lists of "essential tailor shop equipment" are really lists of machines. In practice, the machines are the easy part — you buy them once. What decides whether a shop runs smoothly is the boring inventory around them: the right needle in the right system, thread that suits the cloth, oil in the reservoir, and a spare bobbin case in a drawer.

Here is the full setup, machines and consumables, with the specifications that actually matter.

The machines

Single-needle lockstitch — the one you cannot skip

Stitch class 301, needle system DB×1 (also sold as 1738 or 16×231) in sizes Nm 70–110 (#10–#18), typical top speed 4,500–5,500 SPM. It handles hemming, seam adjustment, zipper replacement and general construction. Buy it with a servo motor — silent at rest, controllable at low speed, and with a needle positioner that stops the needle down so you can pivot without touching the handwheel.

Entry options: Speedway SW 8700 D, Jack F6, Siruba DL720-M1. With an automatic trimmer: Jack A2C-C or Juki DDL-8700. If you work heavy cloth, coats and denim, the large-bobbin, 7 mm-stitch Juki DDL-8100eH (needle system 134 / 134LR, Nm 100–130) saves a lot of frustration.

Blindstitch — the tailoring machine

For a shop doing suits, trousers, skirts and drapery, a blind hemmer is arguably the second machine, not the fourth. It uses a curved needle, system 251LG, that penetrates only part-way through the cloth so the hem is invisible from the face, with a 1:1 or 2:1 skip-stitch setting to make it even less visible on fine wool. Portable: Speedway SW 500 e. Full industrial: Speedway SW-101 or Consew CM-101-1.

Overlock — finishing and assembly

An overlock trims and wraps the edge in one pass. Three-thread (stitch class 504) for finishing raw edges and rolled hems; four-thread mock safety (514) for the everyday knit seam; five-thread safety stitch (516 = 401 chainstitch + 504 overedge) for woven assembly and workwear. The specification to check is differential feed, typically 0.7–2.0 — that is what stops a knit seam from waving and a bias edge from stretching. See the Speedway SW6-4D or Jack E4S-4.

The specialists, when the work justifies them

  • Bar-tacker — belt loops, fly ends, pocket corners. Note that this is not a zig-zag machine: a bar-tacker sews a fixed pattern (a mechanical 1850-class model typically a 42-stitch tack in an 18 × 3 mm area) and stops by itself. Mechanical: Siruba PK522-42M. Electronic: Jack JK-T1900GH-DII.
  • Zig-zag — a separate machine with adjustable stitch width, for elastic, appliqué and lingerie work: Singer 20U-105C, Jack 20U53.
  • Coverstitch — knit hems and neckbands, needle system UY128GAS: Jack W4-D.
  • Walking foot — leather, canvas, upholstery and multi-layer repairs: Jack H2.

Needles: the cheapest thing in the shop and the biggest cause of defects

Skipped stitches, puckered seams, thread breaks and damaged knits are needle problems far more often than machine problems. Three rules cover most of it.

1. The system is not optional. A needle system is a physical geometry — shank diameter, length, scarf, eye position. Using the wrong system will at best skip stitches and at worst hit the hook. Common systems:

2. Size to the cloth, not to habit. As a working guide: Nm 70–80 (#10–#12) for fine silks, linings and shirting; Nm 90 (#14) for general wovens, poplin and twill; Nm 100–110 (#16–#18) for denim, canvas and heavy twill; Nm 120–160 (#19–#23) for upholstery, webbing and leather on a walking foot machine. A needle that is too fine flexes and skips; a needle that is too coarse leaves visible holes and cuts fine yarns.

3. Point matters as much as size. A sharp round point for wovens; a ballpoint or light ballpoint for knits, so it slides between the loops instead of severing them; a cutting point (LR, D) for leather, which is exactly why our needle range lists 134LR and 134D separately.

Keep a working stock of the systems your machines use, in at least three sizes, and change the needle at the first skipped stitch — not the third. Our Groz-Beckert industrial needles come in packs of ten.

Thread: match it to the machine and the cloth

Thread is specified by Tex (weight in grams of 1,000 metres — higher is thicker). Broadly: Tex 18–27 for fine shirting and linings, Tex 27–40 for general garment work, Tex 40–70 for denim and workwear, Tex 90–210 for upholstery, marine and leather.

A caveat worth being straight about: the thread we stock is Fil-Tec bonded nylon in Tex 70, 90, 135 and 210 — a heavy, abrasion-resistant, UV-stable thread built for upholstery, canvas, leather and outdoor work. It is the right thread for a walking foot machine and the wrong thread for a wool suit. For fine tailoring, buy a polyester core-spun or spun polyester in Tex 21–30 from a garment thread supplier and reserve the bonded nylon for the heavy machines. Two shop habits worth adopting: wind bobbins with the same thread you are sewing with, and buy pre-wound bobbins in the correct style (G or M) if your volume justifies it — bobbin winding is dead time.

Cutting and measuring

The cutting table is where mistakes become expensive, because a bad cut is unrecoverable.

  • Shears, kept for cloth only and never lent to whoever needs to open a box. Our scissors and cutting tools section covers tailor shears, heavy-duty shears and thread nippers.
  • Thread nippers at every machine — U-shape spring nippers, one pair per station.
  • Electric cutters when you cut plies rather than single layers. A small rotary cutter such as the Allstar AS-100K handles a few stacked layers; a straight-blade cutter like the Speedway CZD-3 or Jack JK-T3 handles a real spread. See cutting machines.
  • Marking and measuring: tape measure, metre stick, curved rule, tailor's chalk or a marker you have tested on a scrap of the actual fabric first.

Pressing

Pressing is half of tailoring, and shops routinely under-invest in it. At minimum: a heavy industrial iron with a steam supply, a padded pressing table with vacuum if you can, a sleeve board, a tailor's ham and a clapper. Vacuum matters more than most people expect — it pulls the steam through the cloth and sets the press rather than leaving the seam damp and flat.

We carry limited pressing equipment (the accessories section is the place to look, and we can quote a full pressing station on request), so plan this part of the shop deliberately rather than assuming it comes with the machines.

Maintenance kit

Everything on this list costs less than an hour of downtime.

  • Oil, the right grade. High-speed lockstitch and overlock heads take a very light clear sewing machine oil — Juki New Defrix No. 1 is around ISO VG 7–10. Slower, heavier walking foot heads generally call for a thicker grade (a No. 2 / ISO VG 32-class oil). Follow the manual for your specific machine. Never use motor oil, 3-in-1 or anything with detergents.
  • Brushes and a small vacuum for lint. Lint packed into the hook race and under the feed dog is the number one cause of tension problems that look like tension problems but are not.
  • Screwdriver set in the right sizes — industrial screws are unforgiving of a wrong-width blade — plus straight and curved tweezers for threading loopers.
  • Spare wear parts: bobbins, at least one spare bobbin case, a spare needle plate and feed dog, a set of presser feet, and belts. See sewing parts.
  • A written routine. Daily: clear lint from the hook area and check the oil level. Weekly: oil the points the manual marks, check needle and belt condition. Quarterly: change oil in reservoir machines, check hook timing and feed dog height.

The workspace

Industrial machines come on a fixed-height table, usually around 48" × 20", so plan the room rather than the machine: a chair whose height suits that table, direct task lighting at the needle (a lamp on the arm, not just a ceiling fixture), a bin at every station, and enough clear table to the left of the needle to support the weight of a garment. A jacket dragging off the edge of the table will pull your seam off line no matter how good the machine is.

Building it in order

Lockstitch with servo. Blindstitch. Overlock. Then needles, thread, oil and spares before any fourth machine — a well-supplied three-machine shop out-produces a badly supplied five-machine shop every time.
