Machine one: the single-needle lockstitch

Which machine should an alteration shop buy first?

This is non-negotiable. Straight seams, hems, zipper replacement, seam taking-in and letting-out, patch repair — the lockstitch (ISO stitch class 301) does all of it.

What matters when you choose one:

  • Servo motor, not clutch. A clutch motor spins constantly whether you are sewing or not; feathering it at one stitch a second takes real skill. A servo is silent at rest, gives you controllable torque down to a crawl, and — with a needle positioner — stops the needle down every time so you can pivot without touching the handwheel. On detailed work that alone is worth the upgrade.
  • An automatic thread trimmer, if the budget stretches. On short alteration seams you finish a seam every few seconds. Removing the scissors motion each time is the most noticeable time saving you can buy. Compare a basic head like the Speedway SW 8700 D against a trimmer model such as the Speedway SW 8700 C, Jack A2C-C or Juki DDL-8700.
  • Reverse lever within thumb reach and a knee lifter. You will use both hundreds of times a day.

The honest note about heavy hems

A standard 8700-class lockstitch takes DB×1 needles up to about Nm 110 (#18) and has a 5 mm maximum stitch length and a small bobbin. It will hem most trousers. It will fight you on a double-felled seam of 14 oz selvedge denim, and it will run out of bobbin thread on long curtain work.

If jeans and workwear are a real share of your volume, look at a heavy-weight head instead: a larger bobbin, 7 mm stitch length, and needle system 134 / 134LR in Nm 100–130 (#16–#21). The Juki DDL-8100eH is the common choice. Alternatively, some shops keep a second cheap lockstitch permanently set up with a #18 needle and heavy thread so they never re-thread for denim.

Machine two: the blindstitch (blind hemmer)

Does an alteration shop need a blindstitch machine?

This is the machine most alteration articles forget, and the one that pays for itself fastest in a shop that hems trousers, skirts and drapery. A blindstitch uses a curved needle (system 251LG) that penetrates only part of the way through the fabric, so the hem is invisible from the face. A hand-finished trouser hem takes fifteen minutes; a blind hemmer takes under a minute.

  • Speedway SW 500 e — portable, for low volume or a shop that hems occasionally.
  • Speedway SW-101 or Consew CM-101-1 — full industrial blind hemmers with a swing arm that converts to a cylinder for tubular hems, and a 1:1 / 2:1 skip-stitch selector so you can make the stitch even less visible on fine wool.

Machine three: the overlock

Which overlock should an alteration shop buy?

An overlock trims and wraps the edge in one pass and, in its multi-thread versions, seams the garment as well. For an alteration shop the decision is thread count:

  • 3-thread (stitch class 504) — edge finishing on raw seam allowances, rolled hems on scarves and lightweight fabrics. Example: Speedway SW6-3D.
  • 4-thread mock safety (514) — the general-purpose knit seam. If you buy one overlock, buy this. Example: Speedway SW6-4D or Jack E4S-4.
  • 5-thread safety stitch (516 = 401 chainstitch + 504 overedge) — woven assembly, jeans, workwear.

The specification to check is differential feed (typically adjustable 0.7–2.0). Below 1.0 it stretches, above 1.0 it eases in fullness. It is what stops a knit seam from waving and a bias edge from stretching out — and on alterations, where you meet every fabric there is, you will move that dial constantly.

Machines four and beyond, once you know your work

Which machines are worth adding after the first three?

  • Coverstitch — if you rehem t-shirts, leggings or activewear, this is what puts the flat, stretchy twin row back on the hem. A lockstitch hem on a knit will snap. Needle system is UY128GAS. See the Jack W4-D or, for tubular sleeves and cuffs without opening the seam, a cylinder-bed model like the Kansai Special NR-9803GA.
  • Zig-zag — a genuine industrial zig-zag machine with adjustable stitch width, for lingerie, appliqué, elastic and some repair work. The Singer 20U-105C and Jack 20U53 do straight and zig-zag on one head.
  • Bar-tacker — a different machine from a zig-zag, and the two are often confused. A bar-tacker sews a fixed, pre-programmed pattern (a mechanical 1850-class model typically sews a 42-stitch tack in an 18 × 3 mm area) and stops on its own. It is what puts belt loops, fly ends and pocket corners back the way the factory made them. Mechanical models like the Siruba PK522-42M run on DP×5 needles; electronic models such as the Jack JK-T1900GH-DII let you change the pattern on a panel.
  • Walking foot — the first time you turn away a leather jacket, a boat cushion or a heavy bag repair, this is the machine you were missing. The Jack H2 is a reasonable entry point.

The one promise no machine can keep

Is there a machine that sews every fabric without adjustment?

You will read that the right machine handles every fabric "without needing to adjust it repeatedly." That is not true of any industrial machine and never has been. Going from chiffon to canvas you will change:

  • Needle size — roughly Nm 70–80 (#10–#12) for fine silks and shirting, Nm 90 (#14) for general wovens, Nm 100–110 (#16–#18) for denim and canvas.
  • Needle point — a ballpoint or light ballpoint for knits so it slips between the loops instead of cutting them; a sharp round point for wovens.
  • Thread size, and therefore tension.

What modern heads do reduce is the fiddling in between. Material-recognition machines such as the Speedway AI4 and Jack A5E-B read thickness and adjust presser foot pressure and tension automatically within their range, which genuinely helps a shop that changes garment every ten minutes. They still do not change your needle for you.

Keep needles in three sizes on the shelf, in the right systems, and change the needle at the first skipped stitch rather than at the third. Needles are the cheapest thing in the shop and the most common cause of a defect.
